The practice was established by British-born attorney Viv Greene, who, after working in the UK, moved to South Africa and worked for several reputable legal firms in Pietermaritzburg before starting her own legal firm in April 2011.She has worked in various areas of civil litigation and now mainly focuses on High Court litigation, labour, land issues and evictions in terms of both PIE and ESTA, and also advises clients on BEE. She has right of appearance in the High Court.Viv believes that excellent service is the minimum standard clients should expect from Viv Greene Attorneys. Her staff are recruited on the basis they have the same mantra hard wired into their system. Another aspect she has found leads to lots of referrals, is that every staff member is focused on efficiency and helping each clients legal matter arrive at a winning or best possible conclusion as quick as possible, thus keeping the clients costs down. This successful teamwork comes about from having intelligent hard working staff.
Fern SutherlandFern Sutherland
Fern Sutherland, who was born and raised in Pietermaritzburg, lived on the Maritzburg College property growing up and immigrated to New Zealand with her family as a young girl. A year later her family return back home to Pietermaritzburg, this time to stay.Fern attended Pietermaritzburg Girls’ High School and after matriculating in 2005 had the great opportunity to spend the year abroad, which she did in the UK, Bath, before enrolling at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, Pietermaritzburg, in 2007.She graduated with an LLB degree in 2010. After completing her LLB degree she remained in Pietermaritzburg to serve her Articles of Clerkship, and was admitted as an attorney in January 2013. Fern joined our team at Viv Greene Attorneys in January 2013.

Thandeka Silangwe was born and raised in Durban, attended Mowat Park High School while helping her grandmother with the family’s small retail business of selling clothes during the weekends. She matriculated in 2010 and, in pursuit of her passion – law, left the comforts of her home and enrolled for a Bachelor of Law at the University of KwaZulu-Natal – Pietermaritzburg Campus. She went on to complete her LLB degree in 2014.During her studies Thandeka was involved in the national student’s organization called the Students for Law and Social Justice Organization (SLSJ). Through this organisation she had the opportunity to help out in activities of community service, engage with legal minds from all over South Africa including the honour of meeting and engaging with legal minds at the 2012 National Seminar which was held in the Western Cape. This included the likes of the late former Chief Justice Arthur Chaskalson, Justice Edwin Cameron, to name a few. Thandeka also did vacation work with a newly established law firm in Durban.Thandeka joined Viv Greene Attorneys as a Candidate Attorney in January 2015 and is currently serving her articles of clerkship under the guidance of the firm.





Simoné Warber
Simoné was born and raised in Pietermaritzburg. She entered the workforce immediately after matriculating in 2001 and her first administrative position was as a receptionist at Hay and Scott Attorneys.  In 2005 she travelled to mid-town Manhattan, New York to work as an au pair for the Zuccotti/Weinstock family. After expressing an interest in law, her host family graciously offered to contribute towards the cost of her studies and after returning to South Africa she registered for her Bachelor of Laws through the University of South Africa (UNISA).  Simoné took advantage of UNISA’s worldwide examination venues and whilst continuing her studies she temporarily relocated to Aberdeen, Scotland from 2007 to 2009. Whilst living in Aberdeen she worked at both the Aberdeen City and the Aberdeenshire Councils and on board the Total North Alwyn Oil Platform in the North Sea.  On her return to South Africa in 2009 she began working as a litigation secretary for Frederick Badenhorst gaining experience in the fields of Road Accident Fund claims, personal injury and medical negligence litigation. She completed her LLB in 2013 and began her articles at Stowell & Co. Attorneys where she was exposed to the fields of commercial law, High Court litigation and corporate collections. She has appeared in the Pietermaritzburg Regional Court and the Magistrates’ Courts in Pietermaritzburg and the surrounding areas.  Simoné joined Viv Greene Attorneys in January 2016 as an Attorney and will be practicing in the field of general litigation in the Magistrates’ Court, Regional Court and High Court jurisdictions.

Being based in Pietermaritzburg, we are situated within the jurisdiction of:

  • the KwaZulu-Natal High Court, which has jurisdiction over the whole province;
  • the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court;
  • the Pietermaritzburg Regional Court, which in turn has jurisdiction over the districts of Pietermaritzburg, Bergville, Camperdown, Impendle, Lion’s River, Mooi River, New Hanover, Polela, Richmond, Umvoti and Underberg;
  • the Master of the High Court and the Deeds Office, which are based in Pietermaritzburg so we serve the needs of a wide network of corresponding firms throughout the province of KwaZulu-Natal and across South Africa.
  • the KwaZulu-Natal Deeds Office where all property related transactions for KwaZulu-Natal are dealt with, and all records for the province in respect thereof are captured and kept. We are also situate near the Surveyor Generals Offices.
